Highly effective productive workers and leaders share one thing in common – they are excellent at problem-solving because it is vital at the workplace. Therefore, effective problem solvers must have good listening, evaluating, and communication skills so that they can identify the issues, come up with possible solutions, select the best options and put in place a contingency plan. However, problem solving is not a linear process and some selected options may have to be dropped along the way due to personal interests and bias. Reflecting on problem-solving at the workplace Workplaces should have problem-solving mechanisms to provide a conducive working environment for the employees (Butterworth & Thwaites, 2016). Solving a problem ideally brings into play the main skills of an effective problem solver. In a broader perspective, they include good listening, evaluation, and communication skills. Listening skill involves gaining a better comprehension of a situation by discovering the core of the problem and how it is affecting the team. Evaluation entails a process of gathering the information from listening and deciding about the source of the problem (Butterworth & Thwaites, 2016). Excellent communication skills involve letting the team know about the final decision made using the most appropriate platform that fits the message. When it comes to problem-solving, several steps with similar processes are involved. The first major step of problem-solving in a workplace scenario is identifying the issue. One of the key ways the employees exercise poor judgment and make false inferences in the workplace is misunderstanding. A statement "True leadership is earned by serving others" provides an example. At the workplace, this expression is always misunderstood in a way that a managing director will leave his/her main duties aside to handle casual jobs like gardening or making tea. Contrary to that, a managing director who does not sometimes do such things will be poorly judged by his/her juniors and be falsely inferred to be very proud and not being a servant. This is an example of poor judgment as the MD has his JD who work with customers, shareholders, and co-coworkers in a different capacity to achieve the workplace objectives. Stereotype at the workplace is also another key way in which poor judgment and false inferences can arise. Therefore, the gender-based stereotype is very common in the workplace setup where some roles or capacities are believed to be for men and others for women, hence, leading to poor judgment and making of false inferences in the workplace. Deficiency of information can lead to the exercise of poor judgment according to Philippians 2: 3-4. At the workplaces, one exercises poor judgment by perceiving that some selected class of a few co-workers should be offered humility instead of offering it to all fellow colleagues. As far as humility services are concerned, workplaces offer unlimited opportunities and, on the contrary, our workplace offers unlimited opportunities for selfish ambition. Reflection of Personal Experiences Judgment errors are mistakes or business errors that occur as a consequence of poor decision making. Representativeness bias is one of my personal experiences with judgment errors. Basically, it involves the tendency of judging a situation on one’s most prevalent experiences and beliefs. On the one hand, it can be very useful when making quick judgments in our daily lives. On the other hand, bias can be dangerous in more far-reaching decisions because it limits our consideration of other experiences and information. Minimizing Poor Judgment The most effective way of minimizing poor judgment at a workplace is by conducting a regular training on how to practice good judgment and benefit from the overall outcome (Adair, 2007). Poor judgment can also be minimized by educating the staff on the ways of judgment improvement. Finally, ensuring the transparency in communication is also a crucial key to minimizing poor judgment. In summary, problem-solving is fundamental in a workplace setup. Therefore, a clear criterion must be put in place on how to minimize bias and solve problems in a systematic manner to address the root cause of the issue. Effective, corrective, and preventive actions should be henceforth documented so that the solutions obtained are of interest to every party involved in the workplace.
