Path of Exile 3.27 introduces Grafts, a new item type that expands how you build characters. These socketed items sit outside your normal gear and passive tree, and they give you fresh skills or modifiers that change play in noticeable ways. Players who care about PoE 1 Currency and core crafting should still plan their economy, because graft farming and standard item work both matter. The system lets you add utility, movement, or niche effects without respecing your main build, so you can test bold ideas while keeping your core setup intact.
You unlock graft slots by following story beats and by clearing tougher content. The first slot opens after you complete Ailith’s early Act 1 tasks. You must finish those steps to see the initial slot appear. The second slot unlocks after you beat a Breach boss or complete a large Breach encounter. Players should expect to push into Breach content sooner rather than later if they want more grafts. The early slot gives a taste, and the second slot lets you mix a pair of grafts for far more options.
Making grafts uses the Genesis Tree and a process called birthing. You collect Wombgifts and graft blood while you run Breaches and Hives. You must bring those resources to the Genesis Tree and place a Wombgift there. The Tree then lets you turn the raw item into a graft through birthing. The crafting feels different from normal poaching or bench craft. The player interacts with a clear system that grows an item rather than simply changing stats, and that shift makes the whole system feel fresh in play.
Equipping grafts is simple and immediate. You put a crafted graft into an open slot and the graft’s effects start working right away. One key thing to know is that grafts do not scale with your passive tree or gear stats. The graft numbers are mostly self-contained, so the item’s active skills and modifiers run on their own rules. You can still help graft effects indirectly, for example by lowering enemy resistances or otherwise changing the fight, but the graft itself does not get raw damage boosts from your standard stats.
Farming graft blood and choosing birthing targets is the long game. Breach and Breach Hive runs give the blood you need, and higher-tier content usually returns better yields. The economy still matters because you will use PoE 1 Currency and standard items to support the build while you grow grafts. Plan your runs so you hit Breaches often if you want steady graft supplies.
Try grafts early on a low-risk character and scale up once they fit your rotation. Slot one graft as soon as you unlock it and test how it feels in a normal map. Then move into higher tiers once the graft proves useful. The birthing costs and graft blood can add up, so the player should space experiments and refine choices.
