Part 1: What Happened
During my high school time, I had a wide variety of subjects. It was complicated to be the best at all of them, but I studied hard to reach the success at least at those subjects that appealed to me greatly. In particular, I have never come to a class with no homework or only with a few accomplished tasks. I searched for additional information regarding those topics that were studied, which provided me with an opportunity to participate actively during the class discussions. All the classmates recognized my knowledge and asked for advice if they had issues, and my recommendations have never been wrong. In addition to that, other educators recognized that I was good at particular topics if the information studied at two different classes interweaved somehow. Still, my knowledge is not excellent, and I told my classmates and teachers about the uncertainties regarding the correctness of my answers.
However, the teacher of history was not satisfied, which could be seen by her interactions. Once, I prompted my classmate who was answering in front of a blackboard and she said that my knowledge was not good enough to share it and questioned me as well. However, the full answers were provided and she put me A without saying anything. Sometimes, when the teacher gave the new material, she asked some questions no one could answer as we have not studied these topics yet. As a result, the whole class kept silence, and it was a moment for her to refer to me, adding “you should know the answer”. Moreover, there were several situations when I answered and she praised a student sitting in front of or behind me as if she did not understand who was actually talking. My classmates noticed this fact as well and wondered what was wrong and why the teacher behaved in this way.
The worst event happened during the last exam when there was a task to provide oral answers to three questions. I prepared to the exam right next to the teacher, so she was sure I was not cheating. After listening to my answers, she asked me to clarify some additional information and said it was correct. However, when putting a final mark, the teacher said: “your answer was fine, but you do not know the subject good enough to have A”.
Part 2: Looking Back
During the classes, I tried to respond to the situation by revealing all the knowledge. As a result, I managed to obtain decent marks, which was an advantageous issue. However, I had no opportunity to alter my teacher’s attitude towards me. Of course, I could have contacted another educator, trying to obtain his/her assistance, but I did not believe that this practice could have a significant influence on my situation. Teachers knew each other well, and I thought that no one would support me. Moreover, there was no opportunity to prove that I am treated unfairly, because I had some A’s. It seemed that others would say that I was subjunctive as I wanted to be recognized and to have better marks.
That time I actually did nothing to stand my ground, and received B for that exam. I thought of asking another teacher to be present during the re-examination, but I did not believe that this option would benefit me as the teacher of history could have selected other questions and I might lack knowledge to answer them. In fact, that would have been my word against her word. Considering, her power as an experienced teacher, she would have definitely been the one to win this opposition. It seems that when dealing with such situations, it is significant to start acting before they become critical. In particular, I could have prevented the failure during the exam if I tried to resolve the problem earlier either by talking to the teacher of history or by involving a third party to the undetected conflict.
Part 3: What I Learned and How I Can Apply It
The above-mentioned experience made me realize that the abuse of power has to be addressed before it leads to some critical consequences. Considering the case above, it was significant to start looking for an issue resolution before the examination (Spindlove & Simonsen, 2017). For instance, there was a possibility to have a fair conversation with my educator in order to understand what made her act in such a way. First of all, I should have asked her if she is dissatisfied with some of my actions. Maybe there was some misunderstanding that made her unsatisfied, and I was able to explain my actions and avoid further problems. If the teacher did not reveal any problems and pretend that everything was fine, this situation would have been emphasized during a class. For example, I was able to say that it was me who provided the answer (but not another student) until she responded instead of just ignoring my note as usual. Finally, there was a possibility to ask a counselor or another teacher for advice and assistance. Even if it did not work, I would have been sure that I did my best to stand my ground.
I would recommend other people who experience a similar situation to start addressing it as soon as possible because it is the best way to avoid further complications. As a future emergency management professional of FEMA, I realize that it is vital to be proactive when facing even small issues, and that is how it is better to act in case of any issues (Campbell, 2018). If proactive approach will not be possible, I will do my best to react to problems as early as possible, because those people who ignore them will definitely deal with critically adverse events.
