I recently received early access to this upcoming open-world RPG from Krono Studio, and I'm excited to share my thoughts on the gameplay mechanics, classes, and overall impressions. Understanding Chrono Odyssey
Chrono Odyssey is an ambitious project from a new studio, comprising about 50 employees. Being a small team, we should approach our expectations regarding the game's content and vastness with a bit of caution. Open-world RPGs often promise grand experiences but can sometimes deliver in unexpected ways, especially in their early phases.
Important Note: During my gameplay, a known bug capped frame rates at 62 FPS if set to uncapped. Please keep this in mind as I discuss various aspects of gameplay as they may affect your overall experience.
Choosing Your Class Wisely
One of the standout features of Chrono Odyssey is its class system, where players can choose from multiple classes, each with unique weapons and skill trees. At launch, six classes are expected, but during the playtest, I was able to experience three: the Swordsman, the Berserker, and the Ranger on cheap Chrono Odyssey Gold.

Playstyle: Ranged combat with agility and flexibility.

Resource management with Vigor, allowing you to strategize your approach to combat using short cooldowns for weapon swapping.
Berserker
Weapons: Chain Blades, Twin Axes, Two-Handed Axe
Playstyle: Aggressive melee combat focused on close-range encounters.
Key Mechanics:
Bloodlust stacks provide a unique feedback loop where you can sacrifice health for increased damage and self-regeneration.
Special moves provide tactical advantages, such as a berserk state that enhances damage and healing abilities.
Class masteries allow for further customization in playstyle, catering to both offense and defense.
Tactical Choices
When selecting your weapons and building out your character, consider how you want to approach combat. Do you prefer being up close and personal with the Berserker or staying at a distance with the Ranger? The interplay between different weapons and their unique abilities allows for a rich combat experience.
Crafting: A Core Mechanic
Crafting is going to be a vital aspect of Chrono Odyssey. I found that loot drops were quite rare, and most gear is obtained through crafting. Here are some key points regarding crafting:
Resource Gathering: Expect to spend time collecting resources from the environment rather than solely relying on defeating enemies for gear drops.
Variety in Gear: Different rarity levels in crafted gear spells significant differences in performance. Higher rarity tends to come with superior passives.
Customization: As you craft and upgrade your gear, the roles of certain attributes can dramatically shape your build, allowing you to tailor your character to your play style.
Questing and Exploration
The open-world questing experience in Chrono Odyssey felt engaging with plenty of side distractions. Here are a few highlights:
Immersive Side Quests: Random events and side quests kept me engaged, from collecting mushrooms to unexpectedly discovering dungeons.
Dynamic World Events: Events often pop up in your travels, leading to spontaneous adventures, making exploration rewarding and fun.
Challenging Encounters: The difficulty spike when encountering enemies adds excitement, even if it might be frustrating for some. Your ability to tackle these challenges can create fulfilling gameplay moments.
Performance Feedback and Areas for Improvement
While the core mechanics are promising, there are areas that the developers could refine before launch:
Enemy AI and Animations: Improving enemy attack animations and behaviors can enrich the combat experience and create a smoother gameplay loop.
Quick Enemy Respawns: Addressing the rapid respawns of defeated enemies will enhance exploration and provide a sense of accomplishment when overcoming challenges.
